Your honeymoon is the beginning of your life together as a married couple. You want it to be perfect. The truth is, there are thousands of possible destinations and experiences out there. The question is will they be right for you as a couple? Being honest about what you both want and need and getting to know your own personal travel profile can save you from the but-it-looked-great-online trip disappointment. Even if you have different visions of the perfect honeymoon (or romantic getaway) you can work together to come up with an experience you will both love.
Here are a few simple questions the two of you can ask yourselves that will help you better understand your unique honeymoon travel profile as a couple:
- Each of you make a list of the ten best memories you have of trips you’ve taken in your lifetime. Notice if there are any themes. See if you have any similarities in your lists. While you don’t necessarily need (or even want) each vacation to be a carbon copy of things you’ve already done, you can use those larger themes and similarities to guide the planning of your honeymoon. That way, if you decide to step out a little from your comfort zone, you’ll at least have a solid idea of what makes the most meaningful moments for you. Is it a certain type of weather (warm, sunny) or geography (beach, mountains, city)? Certain activities (zip-lining, snorkeling, hiking)? Quiet time? Nightlife? Do you like a luxury resort or a small boutique hotel? Are amazing food and drinks a necessity? When you can build some of these elements into your honeymoon, you’re more likely to come home energized and restored.
- What do you and your partner like to do to relax, unwind, have fun, or re-energize when you’re NOT on vacation? Do you like to be still or active? Quiet or surrounded by crowds? Scheduled or free-form and spontaneous? Simplicity or luxury? Inside or outside? These might seem like silly questions — but you’d be surprised how often people book honeymoons that are filled with activities or set at a pace that they otherwise don’t really enjoy. It’s possible that you’ll love a whole week of snorkeling in the ocean even though you never swim at home — but more likely you’ll be tired and waterlogged. That’s not to say you shouldn’t try new activities every now and then; there’s plenty of room for new adventures. Just make sure that you incorporate new activities in small bites — say, an afternoon snorkel excursion — to see if it’s something you’d really like more of.
- What is your approximate budget? Your honeymoon should be special and unique. It is the beginning of your new life together. Start with a ball park figure and then splurge! You deserve it! You can splurge without breaking the bank. One idea to help fund your honeymoon could be starting a special honeymoon savings account and depositing a set amount of money into it each week. You can also decide to allocate a portion of your wedding gift money specifically for your honeymoon. I have learned that we can afford what we want when we prioritize. Make your honeymoon a priority.
- Do you prefer to be in control, or are you happier when someone else is at the helm? This can be a huge factor in overall enjoyment of your honeymoon. Sometimes people think they’d love to be in charge of everything — but when faced with the reality of hundreds of details that need taking care of before, during, and even after the trip, the fun gets sapped right out of the honeymoon. Often the bride is so busy with the wedding she passes the honeymoon on to the groom to take care of. "Now what?", thinks the groom. You call me! When you work with me, you can create the best balance of autonomy and assistance in order to maximize the fun, romance, adventure, and relaxation on your trip. You will both feel pampered and stress-free. A win-win for everyone!
When you take a little time to get to know how you travel best, your honeymoon can everything you ever dreamed of. Bonus: you can come home and begin your married life refreshed, energized, filled with lifelong memories and more in love with each other.
